Who We Are

“Changing lives, empowering communities, and impacting the world”

Society of Hispanic PROFESSIONAL Engineers

SHPE-UIC started as the Latino Association Supporting Engineering Careers (LASEC) in 1980 here at UIC. Soon after its inception, it became associated with SHPE and thereafter changed its name to SHPE-UIC. Since then, we have always remained one of the biggest and most active organizations on campus. We dedicate ourselves to change lives, empower communities, and impact the world.

SHPE’s vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.

STEM awareness: We want to help students, in middle school, high school and college, find their passion for engineering.

Access: We wants all of our members to have a place where they can study and get help with different classes, whether it be by getting tutoring or simple advise.

Support: We want all of our students to not only find great opportunities, but to find great mentors to count on.

Development: We want our members to not only develop as future engineers, but as professionals and great mentors.
